Criteria for selection of Residents

Interviews are offered to the top candidates based on evaluation of the application materials.  Medical school transcript, research experience, extracurricular activities, personal statement, letters of recommendation, and educational accomplishments are all taken into account. Important intangibles that are fundamental to selection include evidence of leadership, strong work ethic, professionalism, ties to the community, and enthusiasm.

Interviews

Approximately 5600 applications are received annually, and therefore screened based on selection criteria.  Interviews are extended to no more than 150 individuals.

Invitations are sent to the selected applicants via ERAS, along with available dates.  If your selected interview date presents a conflict, please notify us immediately so we can possibly schedule an alternate date.

Interviews begin in November and are held throughout the months of November and December.

The virtual interview is a one-day process, typically on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. The interviewees will be scheduled for either a morning or afternoon session, including a social hour with the current residents. You will interview with two faculty members (one of which could be our PGY-4 Chief Medical Resident) of the MSU Department of Medicine.

Each interviewee will be ranked based on verbal communication skills, attitude, interpersonal skills, and a demonstrated true commitment to internal medicine and our residency program.
