Chief Year
The primary goals for the chief resident year are to become an effective academic leader, role model, and clinician, while also developing essential administrative skills.
Additionally, the chief medical resident serves as a clinician-educator, applying the principles of adult-education theory and academic research. This role also requires serving as a liaison to resident physicians, faculty, and administrative staff.
Training Sites
University of Michigan Health-Sparrow has grown to become the region's largest health system, and its diverse range of facilities offer some of the most advanced medical technology available in the world. With six hospitals located throughout the region, from our Level 1 Trauma Center in Lansing to our Community Hospitals, we're here to provide compassionate care to everyone, every time. Our residents attain robust experiences in acute care on the medical floors, as well as in the critical care setting at the main location in Lansing, Michigan (UMH-Sparrow Main). Finally, our exceptional, 4 weeks, out of town rotation occurs at an off-site location of the resident's choices.
Research
Research Participation during residency is a vital component to professional development. The resident faculty members have many ongoing projects encompassing basic science, clinical, and surgical educational areas. Research participation allows the resident to gain knowledge and experience of searching and critiquing the literature, usage of statistics, abstract and manuscript writing, and presenting their findings at local, regional, and national conferences. During this process, one will become educated in the ethics of scientific research and the role the IRB plays. Residents are mentored along beginning as a junior resident with increasing participation as they progress through their training. National presentations are funded through the program, and additionally, the residents have a CME allowance. A dedicated year to research is not required; however, a resident is required to complete two research projects in order to graduate from the program.
